    Together for our environment

    Environmental protection is an important element of our corporate strategy. We are not only interested in our wider but narrower environment as well, so we have organized waste collection with our colleagues in the vicinity of our Budapest Competence Center. A result, in a couple of hours we collected 4 cubic meters of garbage, most of which were cigarette butts, plastic and glass bottles and plastic packaging materials.

    As our Group Policy on Environment and Energy declares thyssenkrupp AG and its Group companies regard environmental protection and the responsible use of energy and resources as important corporate objectives. Following this rule, we also introduced the plastic free April when we also got rid of plastic cups and decreased the usage of plastic food containers and made colleagues aware how to handle plastic waste.

    Thyssenkrupp donates infusion pumps to SOTE Children’s Hospital

    Marc de Bastos Eckstein, managing director of the thyssenkrupp Components Technology Hungary Kft. presented the two infusion pumps donated to the 2nd Department of Paediatrics of Semmelweis University of Medical Sciences (the Tűzoltó Street hospital) on 28th January, which were accepted by Head Nurse Tóthné Kornélia Kónya representing the hospital.

    In the Tűzoltó Street hospital, 100–150 new young cancer patients are treated every year, which constitutes 40% of all new paediatric cancer cases in Hungary.

    Infusion pumps ensuring accurate dosage are crucial in treating cancer, as the complete eradication of leukaemia cells is made possible with the help of these tools. Infusion pumps are able to ensure uninterrupted infusion, highly accurate dosage of medication, precise, programmed administration of chemotherapeutic medicine. In the case of chemotherapy, manual dosage is not an option, as perfect accuracy is essential. Children will be able to receive medication through the pumps for 2–4–6 hours. The pumps are tested for 24 hours before delivery.

    The total cost of the 2 pumps is about HUF 1.3 million.

    The German thyssenkrupp, present in 78 countries, started developing its electromechanic steering systems in Budapest twenty years ago, it has been assembling undercarriages in Győr since 2013, it manufactures steering systems and engine components in Jászfényszaru, and its stabilizer and spring factory was built in Debrecen last autumn.

    In the automotive industry, thyssenkrupp has a total of approximately 1500 employees in Hungary.

    Sneak-peek into the Future of Steering – Press Day in Hungary

    In June 2018, thyssenkrupp Components Technology Hungary Kft. had organized a Press Day for Hungarian journalists in Zsámbék’s Drivingcamp. In the driving technique safety center journalists got acquainted with and tested the steering systems developed in the E/E Competence Centre based in Budapest.

    After the welcome speech of Marc de Bastos Eckstein, Managing Director, thyssenkrupp Components Technology Hungary, Péter Varga (Head of Projects, R-EPS) held a presentation about Digitalization – The Future Automobile Factory in which he spoke about the current trends influencing the automotive industry, customer requirements and about innovative solutions thyssenkrupp has already introduced in its plants. Dr. László Naszádos (Department Leader, Hardware Department) spoke about the E/E Competence Centre’s target goals, about the challenges electric power steering development presents, questions concerning autonomous driving and the steer-by-wire solution which allows the full exploitation of self-driving technologies. András Csaba (E/E Functional Project Leader) presented the complexity concerning the maneuverability of self-driving cars. Imre Szepessy (Head of Advanced Development Technology & Innovation) held his presentation about the advantages steer-by-wire technology offers for the automotive industry and the end-users.

    After the presentations, journalists could have a look at the exhibition of electronic control units (ECU), the products of three Hungarian thyssenkrupp Components Technology Hungary sites and could test the SAE4 cockpit simulator which demonstrates the steering system of the future. On the test track journalists could experience the steer-by-wire technology developed by thyssenkrupp on a VW Golf R, and also test their driving abilities compared to an autonomous driving car.

    Tomorrow Day – An open day at thyssenkrupp E/E Competence Center in Budapest 

    We organized Tomorrow Day, an open day for the first time in Budapest on 9 May, 2018 in our E/E Competence Center. The purpose of the event was to provide insights into the work of our unique competence center and the more than 700 engineer colleagues.  Besides university students, professors and experienced professionals interested in hardware close software development, our colleagues were also invited to the programs of the open day. The day was split into two parts: in the morning the live final of Coding Tomorrow Cup programming competition for software developers began, where 10 groups had the chance to compare their knowledge. The coding tasks compiled by our engineers included exciting logical tasks, laboratory-related puzzles and even tasks connected to our Mercedes C-Klasse autonomous driving car. In the afternoon, different departments of the competence center were introduced in a series of interesting presentations. Later, the guests and our colleagues could participate at the well-known university professor, Károly Härtlein’s impressive performance called „Brutal physics”. The show put shed light on the most exciting side of physics by various experiments, which cannot be presented in educational environment. Finally, Marc de Bastos Eckstein, General Manager of thyssenkrupp Components Technology Hungary handed over the prizes to the winners of the programming competition, and the event was closed by the concert of the popular Cloud 9+ band. During the open day, the participants could also try parking via a mobile application, drive a special racing car simulator with VR glasses on site or take part in job interview rehearsals.

    Our plant construction in Debrecen is over halfway through

    Our plant in Debrecen, being built in a greenfield project of approximately HUF 11 billion, is more than half complete, and serial production will start this year – was announced today at the topping out ceremony. 6888 working hours were spent, 5362 m3 concrete and 118 373 kg steel are already built in. Springs and stabilizers will be produced for known European OEMs in the 18,000+ sqm plant. Once the plant is completed, 250 new jobs will be created on the site.

    The opening ceremony was attended by Dr. László Papp, mayor of Debrecen, and Marc de Bastos Eckstein, managing director of thyssenkrupp Hungary.

    Further growth for thyssenkrupp in Eastern Europe

    thyssenkrupp opened a further automotive components plant in Hungary. A new production site for chassis and powertrain components has been built in Jászfényszaru, 70 kilometers east of Budapest, over the past months. It will produce electric power steering systems and valve train systems for German and international OEMs. thyssenkrupp invested around 100 million euros in the construction of the new plant complex. As production is ramped up, up to 500 new jobs will be created at the site in the coming months.

    “In recent years Hungary has developed into an important player for the European auto industry. Last year alone some 480,000 cars rolled off the country’s production lines. Our customers are investing in new plants, and we are also looking to continue our profitable growth in Hungary. Our focus is on high-tech products such as electric steering systems and components for highly efficient internal combustion engines and electric motors,” says Karsten Kroos, CEO of thyssenkrupp’s Components Technology business area. A further plant for springs and stabilizers is currently being built in Hungary and is scheduled to start production later this year. New customer orders make the expansion of production capacities in Hungary necessary. Thus thyssenkrupp continues its profitable growth strategy in the components business. The division increased its order intake by 14 percent last fiscal year.

    thyssenkrupp’s new plant in Jászfényszaru is the company’s first in Europe to locate two different product technologies at the same site. Combining the activities will allow efficiency and cost advantages to be utilized. thyssenkrupp has already launched such combined sites successfully in China and North America in recent years.

    thyssenkrupp currently operates an axle assembly plant and a steel service center in Győr for automotive customers in Hungary. The company also has a software development center in Budapest creating software products for electric power steering systems and new applications for steer-by-wire and autonomous driving solutions. Overall thyssenkrupp currently employs around 1,100 people in the automotive industry in Hungary.

  • Cooperation agreement with University of Debrecen

    We concluded an agreement with the University of Debrecen to establish relations between the parties and make sure that IT specialists, electrical and mechanical engineers graduating from the university are even better qualified. The agreement includes providing support to automotive systems-related education development, giving lectures, providing traineeships, and cooperating in project and thesis work. In addition, we will provide positions specifically for students, where they can take part in actual research and development projects. Now that the framework agreement has been signed, the relevant departments will work out the details with us.

Our engineers work on market leading high-tech products and own a lot of patents and know-how. Our environment provides young engineers with considerable challenge and career opportunities. We consciously seek cooperation with universities and colleges, as we have long term plans in Hungary” – said Marc de Bastos Eckstein, General Manager of the software and development  center in Budapest.

    Students get first-hand experience of the know-how and expertise that our Hungarian software development and competence center has gained over nearly 20 years: Guest lectures will point out, in relation to the specific courses, how theoretical knowledge can be used in development in practice. In addition, students who spend their traineeships or write their thesis at thyssenkrupp can work with cutting-edge development tools to improve their practical skills.

    “University of Debrecen, along with its traditional profile of medicine, agriculture and science university – in accordance with the strategic objectives of the region’s labor market – aims to develop high-quality technical university education, to become the East-Hungarian center of engineering education. Concluding the contract with thyssenkrupp means a milestone in this aim. It’s important to understand that, the German company not only considers University of Debrecen as an education location, as besides providing space for guest instructors, co-operation with project and diploma work, the co-operation also extends to science, research development. University of Debrecen also counts as an innovation source for the company” – said Dr. Zoltán Szilvássy, the rector of the University of Debrecen.

    The education of future professionals is a major priority for thyssenkrupp, this is why we are already cooperating with several Hungarian universities and colleges and this is why we have launched a practical vocational training program in Hungary.

    We have started a greenfield project of approximately 33 million euros in Debrecen, where a new plant is being built on approximately 100,000 square meters. Starting from 2018, we will manufacture more than six million springs and stabilisers per year in this plant, creating 250 new jobs in the city. 

  • New factory under construction in Debrecen

    As officially announced on 3 February of this year, our company has launched a new investment project with a total value of close to HUF 11 billion: our new plant is to be constructed in Debrecen, on an area of approximately 100,000 m², where starting from 2018 we will be manufacturing more than six million coil springs and stabilisers per year, creating 250 new jobs in the city.

    Following the announcement, construction was officially launched on 12 May with a groundbreaking ceremony, much like at the Jászfényszaru plant last year. The commencement of construction works was announced by Levente Magyar, the Minister of State for Economic Diplomacy; Dr. Karsten Kroos, CEO of thyssenkrupp’s Components Technology Business Area; Matthias Koll, CEO of thyssenkrupp’s Springs and Stabilizers Business Area; Dr. László Papp, the Mayor of Debrecen; and Marc de Bastos Eckstein, our Managing Director.

  • Jászság “Roadshow”

    In April of this year, we organised industry presentations at two Jászság vocational secondary schools, in Jászberény on 19 April and Szolnok on 20 April where, amongst other things, we promoted our vocational training course (to be launched on September 2017) to graduating students. Our colleagues gave the students interactive presentations on our developments, as well as on the products that the company will be manufacturing at the Jászfényszaru plant. Following the presentation, our local HR administrator communicated the details of the training that is to begin in September.

    The educational workshop awaits the automation technicians of the future at the Entrepreneurial House of the Jászfényszaru Industrial Park, where two groups of 12 students each will be given the opportunity to acquire practical skills from a mentor. Students who adequately master the course material will be offered jobs at our plant, while the most successful students will get to go on an incentive trip to our company’s German or Lichtenstein site, where they will visit the local plant and get to know the students of the local training workshop. In addition, all students will have the opportunity to visit our Budapest competence centre, where they will have the chance to familiarise themselves with development processes.

    thyssenkrupp at Craft 2017

    The Craft international software developer conference has been held by IBM Budapest Lab and Prezi in Budapest in April of every year since 2014. The aim of the increasingly popular event is to showcase the latest – theoretical and practical – innovations and technologies forming essential parts of the tool-kit used by any successful software developer (or company).

    This year, the conference was hosted at the Magyar Vasúttörténeti Park (Hungarian Railway History Park) between 25 and 28 April, with more than 25 workshops held on the first two days at various locations in Budapest, while the last two days focused on sessions at the aforementioned, wonderfully unique location. This year saw the largest Craft event to date, drawing almost 2,000 visitors from 46 countries, all coming to learn from the best lecturers and practical experts in the software developer community.

    This year, we were present as platinum sponsors at Craft, where we also announced a surprise challenge: our programming competition proved to be at least as popular among participants as the freshly-squeezed orange juice on offer at our booth. Many attendees were also very interested in our self-driving Mercedes C200 model, which we used to showcase our developments with self-driving vehicles.

    On the second day of the conference, as part of the “Eclipse/ToolMakers’ Day” workshop, Gergely Pintér, the Head of AUTOSAR and the Fail-Operational Platform Department, as well as Máté Kovács, one of our highly talented software engineers, gave lectures to Hungarian and international participants in the topic of “Model-Based Development and Code Generation for Automotive Embedded Systems”.

    As part of Craft 2017, an opening exhibition under the name of ‘Street of the Future’ was open for viewing on 22-23 April in Madách tér in downtown Budapest. The goal of the free and open event was to present the latest innovations by Hungarian high-tech firms, and to make these innovations shaping our future available to all. In addition to our booth, the exhibition also allowed visitors to inspect the vehicle showcased at the Craft event, and naturally our colleagues were happy to talk about our newest results, offering interesting facts to children and grown-ups alike.

    Who knows, we might even get to welcome some of those sparkling eyes to our company in just a few years’ time!
